Holford’s cross with me!

I’ve had a letter from Professor Patrick Holford complaining about Counterknowledge, which begins: “As an author I have a policy of correcting any errors, inaccuracies or potentially misleading or harmful statements”. Which I take to mean, “As a purveyor of counterknowledge, I’m kept pretty busy chasing after doctors, scientists and journalists who catch me out making misleading statements”.

Anyway, it’s a long, nit-picking letter which points out, among other things, that Holford has “removed” his statement endorsing the Q-link. Fine: so would I, if I was discovered to have praised the “scientific proof” for a New Age pendant pretending to be a scientific device. The letter also takes to task for referring to an “out of print edition” of the New Optimum Nutrition Bible in which Holford says AZT is less effective than Vitamin C. Well, it might be out of print, but it’s still on sale in my local bookshop, Professor.

Oh, and apparently “most reasonable people” would not conclude that Holford is “associated with Scientology”. He sits on the Advisory Board of Safe Harbor, “an employee of which I understand to be into Scientology”, he says. Hmm. Well, your “understanding” is right, Patrick. Google Safe Harbor and find out some more about it.

And, while you’re about it, trying Googling my name. Then you might learn how to spell it.

He is a cheeky chap that Mr Holford. I understand from Holfordwatch that he must have a lot of errors to correct. Presumably so many that it is a time consuming process that prevents him from keeping up to date with the current status of research he cites, such as this story about Mr Holford citing a paper recently that was retracted two years ago.

Slightly OT but note the use of the title “professor” for seemingly anyone who is remotely connected with the faculty of even the most lowly of “academic” institutions. Mr Holford is entitled to call himself “professor” since he is “Visiting Professor, School of Social Sciences and Law, University of Teesside”. The most recent honorary graduate of this distinguished university is the local car dealer [http://www.tees.ac.uk/sections/about/hon_grads.cfm]
